Reseña del editor The American Dream - the idea that with hard work, anyone can be successful in any career – once drew thousands of immigrants to the United States. The country has given the world countless success stories in every sector of industry. But is that concept still true? Can you still make a decent living pursuing any career?Introducing Engineering America: Teaching a Penguin How to Fly, an 18-year-old’s journey on discovering that not all college majors are created equal. The book combines the student’s narrative with candid interviews of some of the nation’s most accomplished individuals to discuss how engineering careers are becoming the trend of the century:Nobel Laureate in Physics Steven Weinberg,Roe v. Wade Lawyer Sarah Weddington, University of Texas Associate Professor Derek Chiou, Author Sheril Kirshenbaum, Economist and Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research Daniel Hamermesh. America has so much talent but not enough of it is pursuing STEM careers. This book hopes to prove to high school students, college underclassmen and anyone looking to create a new career that engineering is doable, needed, financially rewarding and of course, most importantly, “cool.” Biografía del autor Siya Purohit is a nineteen year old student at the University of Texas at Austin where she is studying electrical and computer engineering and economics. Born in India, Siya lived in Illinois, California and Texas before returning to India to attend an international boarding school for three years. There, she served as the chief editor of several student publications. Siya finished high school in Texas where she won three state awards for her work in 'The Black Cow,' Westlake Academy's student newspaper. She continued writing in college as a general reporter for 'The Daily Texan.' Siya's interest in economic development and technology led her to found 'Mitigating the Digital Divide,' in high school. The student organization aims to alleviate the digital divide in developing countries by providing underprivileged students access to technology. The group has collected computers to refurbish and install in villages near New Delhi. She also serves as the global coordinator for Sue's Shoes, an organization that provides shoes for children in rural India.
